# Target an audience

> Choose which affiliates trigger a Referly pop-up or banner: all affiliates, specific affiliates, or affiliate groups, so referred shoppers only see the message meant for their referrer.

By default, a pop-up or banner shows to every visitor who arrives through any affiliate link. But you don't always want the same message for everyone — you might run a bigger discount for your top partners, or a special welcome for one influencer's followers. The audience setting lets you decide *which affiliates* trigger the message for the shoppers they refer.

You'll find it in the **Which affiliates** section on the **Setup** tab of any pop-up or banner. Open one from the [Pop-ups & Banners](/docs/help-center/engage/popups-banners/overview) list to get there.

## How audience targeting works

A pop-up or banner is tied to the affiliate who referred the visitor. When a shopper lands on your site through an affiliate link, Referly checks who sent them and only shows the messages whose audience includes that affiliate. So targeting an audience isn't about picking which shoppers see the message directly — it's about choosing whose referrals it appears for.

## Choose an audience

Pick one of the three options:

### All affiliates

Any visitor referred by any affiliate in your program can see the message. This is the default and the right choice for a general offer that applies to everyone.

### Specific affiliates

Only visitors referred by the exact affiliates you choose will see it. Start typing a name or email in the search box and select the affiliates you want — you can add as many as you like. Use this when a message is meant for one or a handful of partners, such as a co-branded promotion with a single influencer.

### Affiliate groups

Only visitors referred by affiliates in the [groups](/docs/help-center/manage/affiliates/groups) you choose will see it. Select one or more groups from the list. This is the easiest way to tailor messages by tier or segment — for example, a richer offer for a "Top performers" group.

**Default Group** is included in the list and covers any affiliate who hasn't been added to a group yet. Choose it when you want to reach your ungrouped affiliates.

## Save your changes

Select **Save Changes** in the top right. If more than one active pop-up or banner could match the same visitor, each one is checked against its own audience, so a shopper only sees the messages meant for the affiliate who referred them.
