# Target an audience

> Send a Referly announcement to every affiliate or filter it to a group by status, group, country, or commission plan. Combine filters, check the audience size, and preview recipients.

Every announcement needs an audience — the affiliates who'll actually see it. You can send to your whole program or narrow it down to a specific group, so the right message reaches the right people. This page covers where audience settings live and how to build a targeted group.

You'll find these options on the **Setup** tab of the announcement editor, in the **Which Affiliates** section.

## Everyone or a filtered group

Open the **Which Affiliates** section and pick one of two options:

* **All affiliates** — every affiliate in your program sees the announcement. Best for program-wide news like a new promotion or a policy change.
* **Some affiliates** — only the affiliates matching the filters you set will see it. Best when a message is only relevant to part of your program.

## Filter your affiliates

When you choose **Some affiliates**, a set of filters appears. Mix and match them to describe exactly who you're targeting. You can filter by:

* **Group** — affiliates in a specific [affiliate group](/docs/help-center/manage/affiliates/groups), such as your VIPs or a regional segment.
* **Status** — where affiliates are in their lifecycle: active, pending, invited, declined, deactivated, or banned. For most announcements you'll target **active** affiliates.
* **Country** — where your affiliates are based.
* **Commission plan** — the [commission plan](/docs/help-center/manage/affiliates/change-commission-plan) an affiliate is on.
* **How they joined** — the source an affiliate came through.

Each filter you add shows up as a chip, so you can see your current selection at a glance and remove any of them with a click.

## Match all or any of your filters

When you apply two or more filters, an **AND / OR** connector appears between them:

* **AND** — an affiliate must match *all* of your filters to receive the announcement. Use this to narrow down, for example "active affiliates **and** in the VIP group".
* **OR** — an affiliate only has to match *at least one* filter. Use this to widen out, for example "in the VIP group **or** from France".

## Check the audience size

As you adjust your filters, the **Audience size** card in the editor updates live to show how many affiliates currently match. It's a quick sanity check — if the number looks too high or too low, revisit your filters before you send.

For a one-time announcement, select **View recipients** on that card to open the full list of affiliates who'll receive it. You can search the list by name or email to confirm specific people are included.

## Targeting an automated announcement

If your announcement is delivered as an [automation](/docs/help-center/engage/announcements/overview) rather than a one-time send, the audience works the same way — you still choose all affiliates or a filtered group. The difference is *when* it reaches them: instead of going out at once, it's shown to each affiliate when they meet the automation's condition, such as a set number of days after joining. The card shows an **estimated audience** because the group changes as affiliates qualify over time.

## Who the announcement appears from

Separately from the audience, you can set who an announcement appears to come from. In the **From** section, choose to send it from your **program** or from a specific **team member**, so a personal note reads as coming from a real person on your team.
